Elements // December 20, 2004

We took a trip to Suffolk on the east coast of England for my birthday. This picture was taken at a place called Southwold.

There is something really raw about the seaside in winter. I think it is a much more interesting time to see it than in the Summer, especially in the late afternoon on a crisp sunny day like here.

Cafe Culture // December 18, 2004

I took this shot while trapped under a cafe umbrella in Bilbao waiting for the torrential rain to stop.

Geodesic // December 17, 2004

This piece of civic sculpture sits in a park near my home. I love taking pictures at dusk, it really makes you appreciate the fabulous light - something that you can often take for granted otherwise.

I decided to fill the frame with the sculpture so that you look through it rather than at it. I think this makes for a more interesting image.

Still Life with Nozzle // December 16, 2004

This was one of those moments when something just catches your eye. Why take a picture of some plates and washing-up liquid in a bucket? Well, I like the composition made by the curves and the colour contrast, plus it's my photoblog so I'll post what I like ;-)

If you like abstract-ish and colourful compositions then be sure to check out Round Here, particularly the minimalism series and smoke.

Skater // December 15, 2004

This inline skater was getting all hot and sweaty in Bilbao - although it must be said he was doing more posing than skating. I obliged and took a picture.

Neon // December 14, 2004

This picture was taken on a nighttime visit to a business park near where I live. I wanted an abstract(ish) shot to contrast the other shots I had taken.

It's actually taken from the opposite end of the path in this picture but without the aid of a tripod. A bit of judicious hand waving during the exposure helped generate the wiggles.

Terminal // December 13, 2004

People waiting for planes... What is it about provincial airports? Don't they realise they have a captive audience with nothing to do for hours?

Not my best shot but I like the chairs and high-key feel. What can I say?

Sun Flare // December 12, 2004

This set of shots was taken outsite the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. What you can see in the first shot is part of an installation of irridescent plastic sheeting over a frame of scaffolding. The other shots show a wider view. I'm not sure what it actually is either :-) Maybe it itself is the 'art' or maybe it was designed to hold something else. It certainly looked amazing in the bright summer sun.

The Spanish contractors were obviously a bit bemused by the Asian guys who I assume had been brought over by the artist to do the build.

Take a look at the other shots using the controls under the picture, or just click away on the picture to step through them one by one. You can look at thumbnails of the set too by clicking on 'thumbnails' - funny that.

Great Catch // December 11, 2004

Whiling away a few bored hours waiting for a plane in Bilbao airport I managed to capture these two playing cricket in the terminal building.

I'm really pleased how the shot came out considering I was resting the camera on my rucksack to take it. I used shutter priority with 1/3 sec - just a guess really, but managed to capture the movement of the bowler just how I wanted (with only a bit of shake in the background).

Tunnel Vision // December 10, 2004

This is a shot of a weird window display outside a bar in Bilbao. The street you can see in the background is actually a reflection in the window. I'm in there too, although it's not my face but some sort of hologram. Freaky!

Body Board // December 09, 2004

This is one of a series of candid shots I took on the beach at San Sebastian. I was holding the camera down in my lap which explains the odd framing - but I think it sort of works.

Last Dip // December 08, 2004

Taken in San Sebastian (or Donostia if you're a Basque separatist) after everyone had packed up and gone home.

Out of Hours B&W // December 07, 2004

Some more pictures from Cambourne Business Park taken earlier in the evening than the ones here.

Guggenheim // December 06, 2004

This is a shot of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao (Northern Spain) - an amazing building clad in titanium and designed by Frank Gehry.

Picos de Europa // December 05, 2004

This shot was taken on a recent tour of Northern Spain. The Picos de Europa national park is situated on the border of Asturias and Cantabria and contains the highest point in Spain.

We disturbed a wild boar in the woods just after taking this picture - a very scary experience.

A Fine Tackle by David // December 04, 2004

This is a reproduction of Michaelangelo's David from the V&A museum in London.

I've tried to emphasise the skin-like quality of the marble by selectively softening the image using techniques normally employed in 'glamour' shots. I've left the 'point of interest' deliberately sharp.

Out of Hours // December 03, 2004

As this is my first post on not as if... let me say a big 'Hello' to you. I hope you enjoy the site as it - and my photography - develops.

Down to the pictures. These are some night shots of a new business park near where I live. There are more in the series and I'll probably post them at a later date. Stalking about a deserted office complex at 11pm with a camera certainly gets the attention of the security guards.
