Abstract // March 30, 2005

This is actually a picture of some purple tulips and yellow daffodils. I was drawn to the colour combination but the flowers were past their best and starting to wilt. I took about 20 shots, moving the camera in different ways to blur the image. I selected this one because it immediately jumped out as the most interesting. I think the general shapes are still suggestive of green stems and flowers without being too pictorial. The sharp diagonal contour across the middle of the picture adds a bit of interest, too.

Sky Spider // January 26, 2005

This is part of a sculpture outside the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (see my previous shot). It is one of Louise Bourgeois's spiders - amazing things if you get to see one up close. I first came across them at Tate Modern in London.

Light and Shade // January 11, 2005

In this shot I've tried to capture the interesting curves made by a lamp on a wall. I'm not sure whether they are parabolas or hyperbolas - I think they are hyperbolas but let's not get bogged down in the details :-)

The only light source in the shot is the lamp itself.

Still Life with Nozzle // December 16, 2004

This was one of those moments when something just catches your eye. Why take a picture of some plates and washing-up liquid in a bucket? Well, I like the composition made by the curves and the colour contrast, plus it's my photoblog so I'll post what I like ;-)

If you like abstract-ish and colourful compositions then be sure to check out Round Here, particularly the minimalism series and smoke.

Neon // December 14, 2004

This picture was taken on a nighttime visit to a business park near where I live. I wanted an abstract(ish) shot to contrast the other shots I had taken.

It's actually taken from the opposite end of the path in this picture but without the aid of a tripod. A bit of judicious hand waving during the exposure helped generate the wiggles.

Sun Flare // December 12, 2004

This set of shots was taken outsite the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. What you can see in the first shot is part of an installation of irridescent plastic sheeting over a frame of scaffolding. The other shots show a wider view. I'm not sure what it actually is either :-) Maybe it itself is the 'art' or maybe it was designed to hold something else. It certainly looked amazing in the bright summer sun.

The Spanish contractors were obviously a bit bemused by the Asian guys who I assume had been brought over by the artist to do the build.

Take a look at the other shots using the controls under the picture, or just click away on the picture to step through them one by one. You can look at thumbnails of the set too by clicking on 'thumbnails' - funny that.
